NOTES
(by DuoItalian)

There is some minor confusion on one of the Duolingo questions in this lesson, centered around the word cambio (change).

Know in advance that the phrase “dare il cambio” is translated as “to take over for” or “to relieve someone” from work or some type of assigned duty.

  • Devo dare il cambio a Isobella. (I’ve got to relieve Isobella.)
  • Vado a dare il cambio ad Matthew al negozio? (Should I relieve Matthew at the store?)

LINGUAGGIO vs LINGUA
The Italian word linguaggio (language) refers to the ability of intelligent creatures (typically humans) to communicate in various (verbal, music, poetry, body, programming, etc.) manners.

  • Dove ha imparato quel linguaggio volgare? (Where did he learn that vulgar language?)
  • Il suo linguaggio del corpo è cattivo. (His body language is bad.)

The similar lingua (language, tongue) refers to a system that is used by particular groups of people or communities (English, Italian, etc.) to communicate with each other. It is also the anatomical term for “tongue”.

  • Sto imparando la lingua italiana. (I’m learning the Italian language.)
  • Ho bruciato la lingua sull’acqua calda. (I burned my tongue on the hot water.)

TIP: Be aware that the verb mancare (to miss) is likely used instead of rimanere (to remain) when discussing how much time “is left until” something.
