NOTES
(by DuoItalian)
Unlike most languages, Italians speak of hunger or thirst as a state of mind. They do not simply say “io sono fame” (I am hungry) or “io sono sete” (I am thirsty) as we do in English. They instead say:
- Ho fame. (translates literally to “I have hunger”)
- Ho sete. (translates literally to “I have thirst”)
Also keep in mind that Italians do not use the verb mangiare (to eat) when discussing any of the three daily meals. Colazione (breakfast) makes use of the verb fare (to do, make) as follows:
- Giovanni non fa colazione la mattina. (Johnny does not eat breakfast in the morning.)
- Facciamo colazione il pomeriggio. (We eat breakfast in the afternoon.)
Adversely, the Italian pranzo (lunch) and cena (dinner) are both discussed using their verb forms pranzare and cenare.
- Oggi non pranzo. (I’m not having lunch today.)
- Ceniamo la notte. (We have dinner at night.)

I’m not sure, but I think in the example given, Duolingo would have it as di mattina. Giovanni non fa colazione la mattina
And possibly the same di pomeriggio. I don’t know, as only just started learning. In any case, thank you for this website.
