Montagna does not refer to a single mountain, but to the type of place. This is very similar to the way mare refers to the seaside (not to a particular sea or beach), or to the way campagna refers to the countryside.

  • Vado in montagna. (I’m going to the mountains.)
  • Andiamo in campagna. (Let’s go to the country.)
  • Lei è andata al mare. (She went to the sea.)

The prepositions used with these names (“going to” or “being in/at”) are:

  • in montagna = to the mountains, in the mountains
  • in campagna = to the countryside, in the countryside
  • al mare = to the seaside, at the seaside
